How to keep your hair happy during summer?

Summers, for most people living in the Eastern part of the world becomes a nightmare. Added to the terrible heat and humidity is the pollution. For people like me, who are left with no option but to travel in these adverse conditions, life really isn’t much of a fairytale. Rather, watching your skin and hair get damaged everyday is a pain that can be felt only by the ones who go through it. (You may like: My Summer Survival)


So, for all my readers who are going through the same kind of hair-damage, thanks to the sun and the dust, here are a few pointers that has helped me save the remaining few strands of hair.


The summer brings with itself harsh UV rays, and in a few places like Kolkata, major humidity. Consequently, the UV rays make the hair rough and dry, while excessive sweating of the scalp due to humidity makes it dandruff-prone. UV rays break down the hair’s proteins, making it dull and weakening it’s tensile properties.

How do I handle the damage?
Our main aim in this weather should be to keep the scalp as clean as possible along with providing the hair with regular, if not more moisture.


Coconut oil for hair:
Fatty acids in coconut binds the protein in hair making it stronger at the roots and strands. It also contains Lauric Acid which works great for improving hair health. Moreover, it penetrates deep into the hair shaft, making it resistant to dirt and impurities. Dandruff problems caused by humidity will also be solved as it is rich in Vitamin E, Vitamin K and Iron. There are many kind of coconut oils available in the market which claim to give added benefits and smell fancy. But I would recommend, you should go for the edible version of this oil. It is not only of a pure form devoid of chemicals, but is also infused with benefits of the oil. But do not go out with your hair oiled as it will only attract more dirt.

Best way to use it:
Heat the oil and massage it well on your scalp. Keep it on for 2-3 hours and wash it off. It is said that keeping it overnight gives best results, but I will not recommend it to people with an acne-prone skin.

TRESemmé Climate Protection Shampoo & Conditioner:
I try to wash my hair every alternate day. This Shampoo and Conditioner is infused with Keratin. Keratin is a cleaning product that has common protein added to it. This results in a stronger hair cortex, making it sleeker and devoid of frizz. Use the conditioner generously and keep it on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it off.


Added precautions:
You may use a hair serum post hair-wash but use the amount carefully as a product build-up may lead to oily scalp and attract dirt and grime.
Always try covering your hair with a scarf while in the sun. This decreases sun-damage to a great extent.
You may use blotting tissues to wipe off the sweat and oil from the scalp. This will reduce the tendency of the scalp to attract dust.
